CRACKING THE NEURONAL DEATH CODE

Neuronal fate is controlled by signals that at different levels can induce survival or apoptotic death. While these signals contribute to the correct development of the central nervous system and its homeostasis during adulthood, their imbalance can determine the development of neurological disorders. Thanks to genomic screening and the application of “reverse engineering”, we have previously deciphered the complicated transcriptional network that induces apoptosis or neuronal survival, highlighting transcription factors that could serve as “master” controllers. The present project, financed by the PRIN 2022 PNRR call, aims to explore the role of two transcription factors (Hoxd9 and Nr4a1) in cerebellar granule neurons, investigating the effects of their perturbation. The use of these transcription factors as therapeutic targets would allow an innovative pharmacology aimed no longer at cellular hardware but at its regulatory “software”.
