ID: 6 – Strategie e Azioni di prevenzione dell’impatto sulla salute dell’inquinamento ambientale
The integration between the environmental sector’s activities and the health sector’s activities plays a key role in protecting people’s health from the risks deriving from environmental contamination. Furthermore, the aforementioned integration, is essential in ensuring the health of residents in their living places and of workers in their working places. The European Health 2020 strategy indicates, thus, the environmental risk factors among the main elements that determine the health of the population. Indeed, Italy has a long scientific tradition in the assessment of the effects of environmental stressor on health and staff of the National Health System (SSN) and the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) have always contributed to this kind of studies. Nowadays, sumerous tools are available for the evaluation of the environmental risk factors and they take into consideration data from health information systems, data from nominative registers of causes of death, data from cancer registers, data from congenital malformations and mesotheliomas, data from national surveillance systems (such as that on the effects of heat waves, and on the conditions of contaminated sites – SENTIERI), and even data from of ad hoc investigations. Moreover, there are also several innovative methodological aspects that can be applied, such as: the residential cohort study, the use of geographic information systems, the small-area socio-economic position indicators, the methods of characterization and diffusion of pollutants in the environment. All these elements have allowed and still allow the monitoring of health effects of exposure to different sources of pollutants, with particular attention to possible gender, age and social inequalities. However, these different interventions need to be recomposed in order to create a network capable of harmonizing and enhancing the action of each individual public organization involved in the environment and health. The Italian Environment and Health Network (RIAS) project, therefore, intends to consolidate the coordination of the institutional components on the topic of environment and health in Italy by promoting the joint involvement and work of environmental and health structures through the creation of a collaborative platform and the elaboration of specific plans of training and communication.
The project intends to continue the virtuous experience already acquired on the issues of environmental epidemiology (progetto CCM 2015 EpiAmbnet, https://reteambientesalute.epiprev.it/) to implement the programmatic indications of the Task Force of the Ministry of Health on Environment and Health.
- implementation of broader inter-sectoral processes that ensure the operational integration of the SSN and SNPA systems on health and environment issues.
The project will be coordinated by the Department of Epidemiology of the SSR of Lazio, ASL ROMA1 and will have a wide national coverage guaranteed by the participation of 13 regions (North: Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto; Center: Lazio, Marche, Tuscany; South: Campania, Sicily, Sardinia, Apulia) and by the Interregional Coordination Group representing the remaining regions.
