Dr Valentina La Cognata

Researcher

Education: Graduated in Biological Sciences (2012) and in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2014) at the University of Catania, she completed her PhD in Neuroscience in 2017.
Her skills are mainly based on the application of molecular genetics/genomics techniques for the study of neurological disorders as well as for the mechanisms underlying neuronal degeneration.
She participated at the "DNA on disk" project (2014-2015), during which she acquired skills for the development of portable and miniaturized devices to analyse nucleic acids. She was awarded with a research scholarship at ISN-CNR for the topic: "Study of Parkinson's disease" (2016-2018). In 2018, she participated in the Project "Development and application of biosensoristic technologies in genomics", acquiring skills for the generation of iPSC-derived in vitro models of neuronal degeneration. Since December 2019, she is III level researcher part-time (t.d.) at the IRIB-CNR.

Research Activity:
-Genetics and genomics, gene expression profiles and analysis of structural genomic variations, preparation of cell cultures, generation of induced pluripotent stem cells and motor neuronal differentiation.

Currently involved in the CNR-SANOFI ITALIA convention for the research project " Early diagnosis of some lysosomal diseases: analysis of the clinical utility and diagnostic validity of genomic techniques for their molecular diagnosis. Evaluations on the implications of the inclusion of lysosomal diseases in the context of a national newborn screening program.
