Dr. Laura Palumbo is a biomedical researcher at the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation (IRIB) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), based in Palermo. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, mitochondrial biology, and the therapeutic application of natural compounds and extracellular vesicles. She earned her Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine from the University of Palermo, and completed a PhD in Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences at the University of Ferrara. Her scientific work is dedicated to the investigation of experimental models of neurodegeneration, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and cerebral ischemia, with particular attention to mitochondrial homeostasis and neuroinflammation. In parallel, she is exploring the use of natural bioactive compounds as potential therapeutic agents in neurological damage, and is actively involved in the isolation and characterization of plant-derived and mitochondrial extracellular vesicles. Dr. Laura Palumbo has developed strong technical expertise in cellular and molecular biology, including mitochondrial function assays, oxidative stress analysis, cytokine profiling, fluorescence microscopy, extracellular vesicle extraction, nanoparticle characterization and in vivo/ex vivo studies using animal models. She is actively involved in science communication and higher education activities. She has tutored undergraduate and graduate students and served as a member of examination committees within academic programs in the biomedical field.
